The Green Building Program is designed to achieve efficient building standards for new construction. This Program establishes green build standards through education, regulation, and incentives, which will promote and encourage high performing, sustainable development and redevelopment within the Town of Superior. Development meeting the Green Building Program standards will create cost-effective, energy efficient residential structures and commercial multi-family structures that reduce both the production of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from buildings and the amount of material sent to landfills, and conserve and protect water and other natural resources.

Goals

Promote sustainable development and redevelopment;
create cost effective, energy efficient structures that reduce greenhouse gases;
reduce the amount of material sent to landfills;
reduce water consumption; and
promote healthy landscapes.

The Program focuses on the end result and provides information and recommended guidelines to achieve the required standards by making recommendations regarding landscaping installed, water conservation, rehabilitation techniques, insulation, construction waste management, HVAC systems, appliances, lighting, use of renewable energy and materials used. Builders and homeowners can decide what improvements to use and make to meet the green points requirements.

What projects are required to comply with the Residential Green Building Program?

All developments requiring a building permit for:

New construction of residential structures and commercial multi-family (R-2), 4-stories or greater;
Complete restorations of damaged residential structures; and
Additions or renovations of five hundred (500) square feet or greater that are made to existing residential structures.

Minimum Requirements

New construction and complete restoration of damaged residential structures	Addition and renovations of five hundred (500) square feet or greater
>> Compliance with the 2021 IECC plus the Town's adopted strengthening amendments	>> Home Energy Audit
>> 50% of construction waste recycled
>> 65% of material by weight from deconstruction will be diverted from the landfill*
>> All street and walkway lighting installed shall be powered by renewable energy systems or renewable energy credits

*Applicable to any applicant proposing to demolish a residential structure

Green Points Requirements

In addition to the minimum requirements, each project must meet a minimum point requirement based on project type and square footage. Refer to the 2022 Green Building Program Ordinance to review the list of elements that builders and homeowners can select from to achieve the required point value. The verification of points achieved is completed through the building permit review. All projects required to earn Green Points must submit a Green Building Program Checklist with their application.
